Star Wars Rogue One Rumored To Include CGI Peter Cushing

A new report suggests we could see the return of an original Star Wars villain, but with a major twist and we’ve got the details right now on Clevver Newsfeed. Actor Peter Cushing may have passed away in 1994, but could he be set to star in next year’s Star Wars Rogue One? The Daily Mail reports that the first Star Wars spinoff movie titled, “Rogue One” could be utilizing, what sources are calling “one of the most complex and costly CGI re-creations ever” to bring back actor Peter Cushing to play Death Star Commander “Grand Moff Tarkin”. Rogue One stars Felicity Jones as the leader of a group of Rebels who set out to steal the plans for the first Death Star and is set to take place shortly before the events of the first Star Wars movie. Though Darth Vader became the standout antagonist of the film, Cushing’s “Tarkin” was Vader’s boss in the film and the brainchild behind the Death Star. Cushing died of cancer at the age of 81 and according to The Mail’s sources, will be recreated using the latest CGI technology. Sources claim they will be utilizing his footage from the original film as well as from many of his other films in order to recreate his legs and feet as Cushing was never shot from below his knees because he had complained so much about his boots that George Lucas allowed him to wear slippers instead. Tarkin will reportedly play a significant role in the new film, which makes sense considering the plot, but we do have to question the validity of the story. Though CGI has been used in the past to create performances from actors who have passed away during a film’s production with Paul Walker’s work on Furious 7 being the latest example, but that usually consists of just a few scenes and not an entire film’s performance. Also, the Daily Mail isn’t always the most reliable and their sources mention Tarkin was quote, “the one to create Darth Vader and there’s a whole back story that will come out.” We know from the previous films, it was the Emperor that turned Anakin into Darth Vader so the comment seems somewhat suspicious, unless perhaps Tarkin is the one responsible for the technology that allowed his transformation to occur? Cushing’s possible CGI return also brings up questions of the legality of such a thing as his estate would likely have to sign off in order for such a thing to happen. A more likely scenario would be for another actor to take on the role as was the case for 2005’s Revenge of the Sith, but what do you think?
